A Mission Of Caring To Nicaragua
04.12.2014

The physicians and staff of Carolina Neurosurgery & Spine Associates continue to reach out around the world to provide much needed medical care to developing countries. Most recently, physiatrist John Welshofer, MD, and Evelyn Chakarji, CMA, traveled to Nicaragua with a mission trip coordinated by BlessBack Worldwide. They, along with other medical professionals from the Charlotte region, conducted medical clinics and home visits in areas around Grenada, Nicaragua, for one week in February.

In conjunction with the local organization, Los Rayos de Esperanza, they treated 70 to 130 adults and children a day for basic medical conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, COPD, asthma, pneumonia, skin ulcers and wound care, intestinal parasites, arthritis, and gastric reflux disease. The group also held health fairs on proper dental care and how to prevent parasites and worms.

“It was very rewarding to be a part of this trip,” said Dr. Welshofer. “We provided necessary medical care while also promoting self-sufficiency and education so these patients can play an active role in improving the health of their families.”
