Tim's Triumph: From Walker to Golf Course - A Journey of Pain-Free Living
03.03.2025

"It feels like I’ve got my life back." — Tim

Tim’s battle with back pain began decades ago when he first injured his back in his early 20s while working part-time in landscaping. Over the years, the pain would return, and each episode would get worse, making it harder for Tim to live the life he loved. In his early 60s, Tim’s pain became so intense that it left him relying on a walker, unable to move without great difficulty. He started fearing that this would be his reality for the rest of his life.

Understanding Tim's Diagnosis and Surgery

After years of living with frequent flare-ups, Tim finally consulted with Henry J. Elsner, MD, FACS, at Carolina NeuroSurgery & Spine Associates (CNSA) in Greensboro. Tim was diagnosed with a herniated disc at the L4-5 level, which meant one of the cushioning discs in his lower back was pressing on a nerve, causing pain and discomfort. Additionally, he had spondylolisthesis at L5-S1, where one of his lower vertebrae had slipped out of place, and lumbar stenosis, a narrowing of the spinal canal that puts pressure on the nerves. These conditions led to lumbar radiculopathy, causing pain that radiated down his legs.

To address these issues, Dr. Elsner recommended a surgical approach. Tim underwent a lumbar laminectomy and decompression, which relieved the pressure on his nerves by removing parts of the bone and disc material causing the compression. Additionally, he had a posterior lumbar interbody fusion to stabilize his spine and segmental fixation using pedicle screws to hold the affected areas securely in place while they healed. The surgery was performed locally in Greensboro, making it convenient for Tim and his family. The results were nothing short of remarkable.

A Life-Changing Recovery Back on the Course

"The first thing I did after surgery was walk around the hospital floor with a walker," Tim shares. "Two days later, I didn’t even need the walker anymore." The transformation was instant and life-changing. Tim was not only able to walk again, but he was soon back to doing the things he loved—golfing, swimming, and enjoying his life without the crippling pain that once defined his days.

"Being able to play golf again was incredible. After surgery, I honestly didn’t think I would ever play again," Tim says with a smile. "But here I am, back on the course!"

He vividly recalls his first day at the driving range, testing his ability to twist and swing a club. Those initial swings were symbolic of his journey back to health. Now, Tim plays golf 2-3 times a month, enjoying every moment on the green.

Rediscovering the Joy of Travel

Before surgery, Tim worried that his back pain would end his love for travel. But since his recovery, Tim and his wife have gone on two cruises (one Caribbean and one European river cruise), explored Yellowstone, and are planning a trip to Yosemite this year. He has snorkeled in Antigua and white-water rafted on the Snake River in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. "I never thought I’d be able to do those things again," he reflects. "But thanks to Dr. Elsner and the surgery, I’m back to living life to the fullest."

Looking Forward

Tim credits his success to not only the surgery but also the advice he received from Dr. Elsner. He followed all the recommendations for recovery, and his commitment to physical therapy, walking, and stretches has been crucial in his recovery. "Motion is the lotion," he reflects, emphasizing how crucial it is to continue stretching and exercising, even after surgery.
